Upgrading of Kenyalang Interchange & Jalan Lapangan Terbang, and Proposed New KIA / Jalan Stutong Link Road, Kuching, Sarawak

Prior to the upgrading works, the BDC Roundabout was heavily congested for all the five legs including the route to and from the Kuching International Airport. Upgrading was therefore necessary to ensure that the protocol road provides uninterrupted journey to and from the Kuching International Airport besides bringing relief to regular road users in the area.

The Interchange upgrading adopted a design concept for the superstructure that is slim and open to provide pleasing aesthetics and minimum visual obstruction for motorists. A design speed of 70km/hr has been adopted except for the semi directional ramps where the speed is 40km.hr.

The superstructure consists of five flyover bridges ranging from 247m to 461m long giving a total of 1835m. Each bridge carries two 3.5m traffic lanes with marginal strips on both sides of the carriageway. The interchange upgrading also include re-alignment of the at grade slip roads, construction of motorcycle lanes and foot paths and relocation of affected utilities.

Project 1: Upgrading of Kenyalang Interchange

Project description :  Upgrade Kenyalang Interchange

Project scope of works involves the following:
  • 2 lane flyover for the Kuching-Airport direction (Bridge KA).
  • 2 lane flyover for the Airport-Kuching direction (Bridge AK) which is next to the Bridge KA, separated by a-1metre gap.

  • Upgrade to 3 lane each way the part of Jalan Lapangan Terbang between the Kenyalang Interchange and the limit of contract. A motor cycle lane and walkway shall also be provided for each direction.

  • Realign the 2 lane at-grade slip roads including a motor cycle lane and walkway at.
  • Drainage works
  • Street lighting works
  • Water supply works
  • Resurface the existing Roundabout
  • Relocation of existing utility services affected

Project 2: Kuching International Airport (KIA) / Stutong Link Road

Project description :  Construct a new road linking the Kuching International Airport to the Kenyalang Interchange.

Project scope of works involves the following:

  • Upgrade to 2 lane each way the part of Jalan Lapangan Terbang between the Airport limit of Contract and the limit of Contract for Project 1. A motor cycle lane and walkway shall also be provided for each direction.

  • Signal light controlled junction at intersection of the Jalan Lapangan Terbang and the proposed Stutong Link Road.
  • Starting from the Jalan Lapangan Terbang junction a 700m long stretch for the new link road with 2 lanes in each direction.
